Stockholm Jazzorchestra: Tango

Inspired by Argentinean trumpeter Gustavo Bergalli, whose lush, jazz-tinged horn is featured throughout, this tribute to the native music of Buenos Aires also brings to the fore the bandoneon sounds of Juan-Jose Mosalini. Although usually associated with more straight- ahead jazz projects, the multi-talented Stockholm JazzOrchestra nevertheless disports itself in the finest professional manner in its performance of Carlos Franzetti’s charts of the standards, “Revolucionario,” “La Ultima Curda,” and “Nostalgico,” as well as his own “Capicua,” “Milonga Rea,” and “Tango Fatal.” Other tunes include “El Arrastre,” “Chiquilin de Bachin,” and “Los Mareados.” What with classic definitions of jazz being daily challenged by borrowings from other cultures, who today wants to put his head on the chopping block by pontificating on the obvious? Let us just say that Tango will please those who are already disposed to enjoy this sort of polished fusion.
