Steve Coleman Tours, Teaches

Alto-saxophonist Steve Coleman (pictured), who in the mid-’80s integrated the sounds of funk, soul, world music, and jazz and called it “M-Base” will hit the road for 13 days with his longtime, forever-changing band, Five Elements, beginning tonight at the Jazz Gallery in New York. Some of the stops on the tour are schools, where students will enjoy a clinic administered by Coleman and his Elements. This time out, the Elements are trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson (who won’t appear in Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Berkeley), bassist Rich Brown and drummer Sean Rickman. You’re right, that’s only three Elements. Tour dates follow, for venue addresses and phone numbers, plus access to free M-Base mp3 files, visit www.m-base.com/tour.html.

Nov. 14 New York, NY Jazz Gallery (concert)
