Stern/Wooten Play Both Coasts

For a week at the end of November, former Miles Davis guitarist Mike Stern (pictured) and current Bela Fleck bassist Victor will play a week’s worth of funk and fusion at New York’s Iridium club. Earlier this year the pair (with drummer Dennis Chambers) played a week of dates at Yoshi’s in Oakland, Calif., sold out every performance and dazzled Bay Area fans with electric improvisations. For the Iridium dates, Stern and Wooten are bringing precision stickman Dave Weckl into the fold (Chambers will not be present) and have also enlisted saxophonist Bob Franceschini to make the group a quartet. The shows will run between Nov. 26 and Dec. 1. The Iridium is at 1650 Broadway at 51st St., call (212) 582-2121 for tickets and reservations.

Are you a West Coast fan, upset because the funky good times are 3,000 miles away? Don’t be. Dropping Weckl and Franceschini for drummer Lionel Cordew and saxophonist Bob Sheppard, Stern and Wooten will play six nights at L.A.’s Catalina Bar and Grill from Dec. 3 to 8. For tickets call (323) 466-2210. That’s where the Stern/Wooten fun ends, but on December 11 and 12 as Stern will play with bassist Lincoln Goines, Cordew, and Franceschini at About the Music, a new Seattle jazz venue. Call (206) 762-5518 for more information and tickets.
