Stanley Turrentine: Do You Have Any Sugar?

When Stanley Turrentine came up with Max Roach in the early Sixties I figured he was a man to watch, but I sure didn’t think he’d become a pop star. He plays very well here, though some of the tracks are commercial, featuring the very competent vocals of Nikki Harris. Turrentine exhibits his characteristically husky improvising style, exhibiting a full, throaty tone and sometimes playing a restrained lyricism that’s not usually associated with him, but performs with enough vigor to keep his fans happy.

There are also nice spots by guests pianist Joe Sample and trumpeter Rick Braun. I knew Sample was a strong jazz player, but Braun was a pleasant surprise.
