Sonny Rollins to Kick Off Vancouver Jazz Festival

The 22nd annual TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival opens on June 22, 2007 with a rare solo performance by tenor sax giant Sonny Rollins. What needs to be said about the Saxophone Colossus that hasn’t already been said? Winner of the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and the recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1983, the 76-year-old New York City native has shared stages with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, recorded over 70 albums and has inarguably altered the course of jazz’s evolution with his more daring compositions.

Produced by Coastal Jazz & Blues Society, the Vancouver Jazz Festival runs from June 22 to July 1. Complete festival details will be available on April 25 on www.coastaljazz.ca. Tickets may be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 604-280-4444 or the Jazz Hotline at 604-872-5200; they go on sale this morning at 9 a.m. and range from $65-$75.
