In celebration of what would have been Miles’ 75th birthday, the Smithsonian has assembled an all-star, all-day seminar to commemorate Davis on June 23. The day will include talks by Teo Macero, producer of many of Davis’ Columbia albums, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, who was in
Davis’ band from 1958 to 1963. John Edward Hasse, editor of Jazz: The First Century, will give a biographical overview and author Gerald Early will critique Davis’ memoirs. David Baker, the musical director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, will conduct a session on Davis’ compositions. An evening concert is scheduled, but the performers have not yet been anounced.
