Shelly Manne: Sounds of the Different Drummer by Jack Brand & Bill Korst

This LP-size labor of love is a comprehensive biography of one of the best-liked, busiest jazz-and-studio drummers in music. Manne’s voluminous recorded history is traced from his first efforts on 52nd Street to the Hollywood film studios.

Meticulously documented, but liberally sprinkled with anecdotes from Shelly’s friends and fellow musicians, the book also includes a generous collection of superb photos-many provided by Manne’s wife Flip-and a complete filmography. One can only stand in awe at the number of records and films Manne performed on.

There are also transcriptions of some of Manne’s solos, and a behind-the-scenes look at Shelly’s club, The Manne Hole. Scores of examples confirm Manne’s nice-guy reputation, and are perhaps best summed up by pianist Andre Previn: “I had the unmitigated pleasure and privilege of working with him under a great many circumstances: records, concerts, tours and film music. His participation was always flawless and it was at all times, great fun to be with him. He was a sweet generous friend.”

The hefty price tag is more than justified. This is a limited edition, however, and available only by mail.
