In the past SFJAZZ has honored musicians with its annual Beacon Award. But this November the recipient will be a little outside the norm: a jazz writer.
Philip Elwood (pictured), the respected jazz columnist and disc jockey highly regarded for the taste and intelligence he brings to Bay Area audiences, will be presented with the Beacon Award at the Herbst Theatre on Monday, November 3, during the San Francisco Jazz Festival.
The award, now in its fourth year of existence, honors a member of the Bay Area jazz community for his or her contributions to “preserving the traditions and encouraging the growth of jazz in the Bay Area.”
See’s Candies, the awards sponsor, will make a contribution of $5,000 to SFJAZZ education programs in Elwood’s name, which is fitting because he also teaches at the Berkeley High School. Last year’s recipient was pianist Ed Kelly.
As we reported here, 2004 will see the launch of the SF Modern JAZZ Collective, a bay-area supergroup of sorts led by esteemed tenor saxophonist and SFJAZZ artistic director Joshua Redman.
The San Francisco Jazz Festival will take place from October 23 through November 9, with performances all throughout the city from artists ranging from Cecil Taylor to McCoy Tyner to Bill Frisell to Etta James.
