Sergio Brando and Manga-Rosa: Brazilian Landscapes

Sergio Brando leads a group of authentic musicians on a contemporary exploration of Brazilian musical styles.

The original compositions are linked to traditional rhythms and sounds of the genre. His guitar and the high pitched flutes and saxes, plus a fluegelhorn, lend an airy and sensuous flair to the presentation, on the other hand it thereby lacks any deep-throated bite.

The rhythm lays it on thick and heavy handed, in an electric, pop-jazz background that might make it more accessible to general audiences, but the result is too sweet and cloying to call this a jazz record. Still, it’s pretty listening of the spiritual side of Brazil.
