Jazz producer and live music recording engineer Tim Pinch of InsideJazz has partnered with SelectRadio software to make live jazz from Southern California venues available on cell phones and wireless handheld devices. The partnership will enable Windows Mobile phone users to get InsideJazz’s four continuous channels of live jazz, blues and Latin concert performances, with a selection of styles including straightahead trios, traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, bebop and fusion.
Recognizing the importance of live performance to the jazz fan base, Pinch has recorded at venues including Humphrey’s in San Diego, the Vic in Santa Monica, Cafe Metropol in Los Angeles and the Pasadena Jazz Festival. SelectRadio will stream exclusive audio from InsideJazz’s live music library and concert archives, and new performance recordings will be added weekly to provide fresh selections for mobile listeners.
SelectRadio is compatible with a number of PDAs and handheld phone models, and requires a network connection through either WiFi or a handheld wireless device to provide one-touch access to the InsideJazz content page. Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
