Seba: Ewa!

Made up of Algerian brothers, Seba is riding the wave of Western-influenced Arabic music filtering into the world. The six Seba brothers, raised in the suburbs of Paris but with a strong link to their homeland, are led by keyboardist and lead vocalist Abdel-Ouab Seba, who sings with a bold, limber flair. They have been performing for a decade, and have shared stages with fellow Arabic sensations Cheb Mami and Khaled. Dance-inductive rhythms are the rule in the music on their debut recording, Ewa! (Tinder 860952; 50:21), with strains of hip-hop and even postdisco culture blending in with more indigenous Algerian sounds, as in “Rai Rai” and “Salam.”
