Scott Hall Quartet: Strength in Numbers

Trumpeter Scott Hall’s debut release consists of eight original straightahead compositions. The Chicago native plays open and muted horn and flugelhorn, while pianist Karl Montzka alternates between piano and organ. There are two Latin tunes, “Scott’s Samba,” with drummer Dana Hall playing Brazilian percussion, and the opener, “Latin on Lawndale.” The bassist is the capable Larry Kohut. The foursome are at their swinging best on the closer, “Do Not Wet.”
