Saxophonist Jon Irabagon Wins Monk Competition

The winner of the 21st annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition is Jon Irabagon, an alto saxophonist based in Astoria, New York. Irabagon will be awarded $20,000 and a recording contract with Concord Records. The competition, which is held in Los Angeles and ended last Sunday, judges young musicians and concentrates on a different instrument each year. Judges this year included saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Greg Osby, David Sanchez, Jimmy Heath and Jane Ira Bloom.

Runners-up in the competition were Tim Green of Baltimore and Quamon Fowler of Ft. Worth. Tex.

Irabagon has already recorded one album under his own name, Outright!. He also performs with the group Other People Do the Killing.
