Sandoval Drops Trumpet for Piano on New CD

Where in the world is Arturo Sandoval’s horn? No, this isn’t a new game from the makers of “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?” but rather an honest question for the Cuban-born, Miami-based trumpeter has forsaken his brass for ivories on his upcoming CD, the creatively named My Passion for Piano (Crescent Moon/Columbia).

Dizzy Gillespie inspired Sandoval to take up the piano to become a better trumpeter and to increase his composing and arranging skills. Sandoval has played piano on record before, but My Passion for the Piano, which comes out March 12, is the first time he’s recorded exclusively on that instrument. The CD is a trio date with bassist Dennis Marks and drummer Ernesto Simpson with special guests saxophonist Ed Calle and percussionist Samuel Torres.

Sandoval displays his passion for the piano on the CD by playing an Imperial model Bösendorfer that was custom-made for Oscar Peterson. Sandoval acquired the piano, which has 10 extra keys, two years ago.
