The International Center for Arts at San Francisco State University announced last week a new post-graduate fellowship and international competition, “Generations.” The program, which will allow for combos of aspiring musicians to receive training and career preparation from distinguished jazz artists, includes a yearlong fellowship at San Francisco State University.
Supported by a number of jazz musicians, including saxophonist Eric Alexander, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and bassist Ray Drummond, the program encourages young combos (composed of three to seven musicians) to compete for the opportunity to win the fellowship. Those combos chosen to be finalists will be invited to the university in May 2008 for a mini-residency and public performance, and one lucky combo will return to the university in fall 2008 to begin the one-year fellowship.

Mid-November 2007: Guidelines and applications available to combos whose members are less than 30 years old as of May 1, 2007 and who personnel has been stable for at least 12 months.
March 14, 2008: Final date to receive applications.
April 4, 2008: Finalist combos announced.
Week of May 12, 2008: Finalist combos travel to San Francisco for mini-residency with Generations’ mentors.
May 17, 2008: Finalist combos perform; winning fellowship combo announced.
Fall 2008: Winning combo arrives in San Francisco to begin fellowship residency.
