Saltman Knowles: Return of the Composer

Co-leaders of this D.C.-based group, bassist Mark Saltman and pianist William Knowles hit on an easy, swinging accord here with veteran drummer Jimmy “Junebug” Jackson, trumpeter Alvin Trask and alto saxophonist Rob Landham. Singer Lori Williams-Chisholm is a dynamic presence throughout, offering exquisite wordless vocals on Saltman’s “It’s Been a Mad Spring,” “A Pillar of Saltman” and his Latin-flavored “A Study in Purple” along with Knowles’ grooving “Seeds and Deeds.” She also sings lyrics on Knowles’ “Pain Management.”
