A veteran of 33 years and 14 albums, pianist Roy Meriwether possesses artistic stamina and an incredible musical vitality. For his first new recording in four years, he delivers quicksilver fluidity laced with gospel licks and rhapsodic passages.
Meriwether drives the blues on “Don’t Look Under the Bed,” slows down for “Please Send Me Someone to Love,” and flash-dashes Don Pullen’s “Ah George, We Hardly Knew You.” He includes his teen-age debut hit from 1966, “Soup and Onions,” and three more originals, including “When I Think of Miles,” a tribute to his ’60s studio colleague, and lovely love song, “Silver Mist.” Meriwether is both lyrical and masterful throughout.
