Ronald Turner and the Fashion Statement: Love Prevails

No one need suggest that drummer and composer Ronald Turner keep his day job. But you should know that he reports to the federal government as a computer technician and instructor. His workmanlike drums anchor the CD, and he’s content to make a record of his compositions that doesn’t pointlessly show off his playing. There are a few vocal tunes, the best being “I Never Want to See You Cry” with LaVan Davis’ smoky and mature baritone channeling the very best of soul man Teddy Pendergrass. Overall, this is a fairly standard set of tunes to get you in a particular mood, and you know which one. But the real star of the CD turns out to be underrated smooth-jazz saxman Andre Delano, whose tenor simply owns the old-school jazz tune “Just Beautiful” and who tears it up on the bluesy “Dianne’s Collard Greens.”
