Rhythm Logic: Rhythm Logic

A self-proclaimed “super group” featuring Michael White and Ron Smith (veteran players noted for time with Frankie Beverly and Maze), Rhythm Logic mines similar territory explored by Fourplay-mostly mid-tempo, synthesizer driven light R&B fare.

On the group’s eponymously titled debut effort (Zebra ZD 44018; 48:14), the genre is delivered with mostly coldly electronic, unaffecting results (“Take Me Away” and “You Know I Will” are prime examples). Some well-chosen cover tunes are likewise

rendered either dull and fluffy (the great Donald Fagen tune “I.G.Y.,” saddled here with a way-too-slow-developing intro) or artificial and aloof (Earth Wind & Fire’s “Fantasy,” which fails to spark despite the best efforts of throaty-voiced Maysa Leak).

More promising selections include the catchy “Tuesday’s Love,” propelled by a romping rhythmic bass line by Dwayne Smith, and “Full Speed,” demonstrating the band’s tight timing on a halting-mid tempo piece-although it’s not quite the fusion train you might hope for based upon the title.
