Professor Taylor

Although Ken Burns’ Jazz apparently snubs Cecil Taylor and other figures of the jazz avant-garde, Mr. Taylor remains important to those who truly know. The controversial pianist/composer will bring his master workshops to New York City for the first time this February, instructing at the Turtle Bay Music School.

The residency at Turtle Bay will include seven workshops and a concert at the end of the month. Workshops will be held on February 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21 and 24. The tuition for each participant is $300 and each musician must bring their own instrument. Lazy students beware, Mr. Taylor has a history of being a tough teacher. When he taught at the University of Wisconsin he failed two-thirds of his students for lack of seriousness. The concert will be held on February 24 at 8 pm.
