Prestige to Release Rudy Van Gelder Remasters Series

Prestige will release 10 remastered CDs next Tuesday as part of its Rudy Van Gelder Remasters series. Van Gelder, the original engineer on the sessions, remastered the 10 discs and new booklet essays were commissioned for the packages and appear alongside the original liner notes. Ira Gitler and Joe Goldberg, authors of notes on seven of the 10 original LPs, reprise their role and comment on their observations from 50 years ago.

The 10 titles are Eric Dolphy’s Out There, Gene Ammons’ Boss Tenor, John Coltrane’s Lush Life, Miles Davis’ Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet, Sonny Rollins’ Saxophone Colossus, Coleman Hawkins’ The Hawk Relaxes, Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane’s Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane, Kenny Dorham’s Quiet Kenny, Red Garland’s Red Garland’s Piano and the Modern Jazz Quartet’s Django.

Ten more titles will follow this summer, and another five in the fall.
