Jolly, bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Nick Martinis form one of the longest continuously-active groups in jazz, first heard at the opening of the legendary Donte’s in 1965. Not surprising that they achieve a tight groove; but this swinging CD makes clear the decades have NOT curtailed theirinventive fire.
Jolly has immense technique and a lyrical touch; his pianism is joyful and accessible. Titles include friendly nods-“Yeah!” by Horace Silver, “Ah-Moore” (Al Cohn), “The Red Door” (Zoot Sims), and “Diablo’s Dance,” by Shorty Rogers, with whom Jolly worked in every type of Hollywood studio call. Other tracks are “Crazeology” (“Bud’s Bubble” when Powell recorded it), and a shimmering “Dream Dancing” (Cole Porter).
