The drumless-trio CD Mirabile Dictu ranks in the top echelon of Smoker’s recordings. Bassist Ken Filiano and guitarist Steve Salerno join Smoker for the album. There’s a great deal of collective improvisation on Mirabile Dictu that varies quite a bit in density, from economical to busy. There are unaccompanied solos as well, and because there is no drummer the subtly of the individual player’s work is underlined. The players also give a straight, lovely performance of Bobby Troup’s “The Meaning of the Blues.”
