Paul Smoker and Vinny Golia: Halloween ’96

This album could have used some editing. While trumpeter Smoker and multi-reedman Golia (here playing baritone saxophone exclusively), joined by bassist Ken Filano and drummer Phil Haynes, exhibit enviable technique and interplay on this mildly avant garde session, their solos are too long. (The shortest performance clocks in at 10:26.) To their credit, the players spend little time in the tonal freak-out zone that seems to be required on most free-jazz sessions.
