Ornette Coleman to Open UCLA Live Jazz Series

Ornette Coleman, winner of this year’s Pulitzer Prize of Music and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, has another accolade to add to his mantel: opener of the 2007-2008 UCLA Live Jazz Series.

With his quintet, Coleman will play the first date in the series tomorrow, Sept. 26, and will premiere new music from his latest Grammy-nominated album, last year’s Sound Grammar. The Ornette Coleman Quintet will feature Coleman’s son, Denardo, on drums, as well as three bass players (Tony Falanga and Charnett Moffett on acoustic bass; Al MacDowell on electric bass).

All concerts in the series will occur in Royce Hall on UCLA’s campus. Tickets for the Ornette Coleman Quintet cost $60, $46 and $28 and may be purchased on uclalive.org or by calling (310) 825-2101.

Other events in UCLA Live’s 2007-2008 series include:

10/30: Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra

1/18/2008: The Monterey Jazz Festival 50th Anniversary Tour, featuring Terence Blanchard, Nnenna Freelon, Benny Green, James Moody, Derrick Hodge and Kendrick Scott
