Orbert Davis Wins Disc Makers’ Prize

Chicago-based trumpeter Orbert Davis must have been happy to be without a record label on June 6, the night he was awarded $35,000 in prizes and the title Top Independent Act in the Midwest at Disc Makers’ Independent Music World Series Midwest Finals. Davis beat out five other finalists who competed at the event before a panel of twelve judges, which included representatives from the Grammy Awards, ASCAP, Billboard, Illinois Entertainer, Shure, The Chicago Tribune, Q101, and Warner Bros.

Davis has played on over 2,700 television and radio commercials but the trumpeter has received a bit of critical acclaim due to his presence albums by Ramsey Lewis, Steve Cole and Kurt Elling. Though he does have two CDs as a leader to his name, he doesn’t have a label, which is a requirement for participating in the contest. Disc Makers, the contest’s sponsor, is a CD manufacturing company that caters to independent artists. The $35,000 worth of prizes includes recording gear, instruments, CD manufacturing services and DJ equipment.
