Today is the 60th birthday of Olu Dara, born in Louisville Mississippi January 12th, 1941. The multi-instrumentalist’s long-awaited new album, Neighborhoods, is scheduled for release on February 20th, 2001. Following the success of Dara’s 1998 debut album as a leader, In the World: From Natchez to New York, Neighborhoods is an album of joyous stories and sounds that reflects both Dara’s Mississippi roots and his residency in Harlem.
Dara, who as a cornetist/trumpeter collaborated with many amazing groups and performers throughout the ’60s,’70s and ’80s, has made a name for himself in the world of musical theater writing and has also become known as a singer and guitar player. It’s the culmination of such experiences that bring such soul and energy to Neighborhoods.
