NYC Clubs Dim House Lights in Memory of John Hicks

On Sunday night at 9 p.m., as a tribute to late pianist John Hicks, New York City’s major jazz clubs will be dimmed for a moment of silence. In an effort to broaden the tribute, radio stations nationwide are being asked to play a John Hicks tune concurrent with the club memorials.

In addition, a benefit performance for Mr. Hicks’ family will be held tonight at Sweet Rhythm. Performers include notable pianists such as Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller. Jazz venues nationwide are encouraged to participate by holding their own tributes.

Hicks, who the New York Daily News called a “superb soloist and fine jazz composer,” was also compared to the offensive lineman who makes the touchdown possible but lingers in the shadow of the running back.

Organizer Lois Gilbert, managing director and owner of, anticipates a successful event and hopes it will become an annual tradition.

Sweet Rhythm is located at 88 Seventh Ave. South (Between Grove and Bleecker Streets) New York, NY 10014. Call (212) 255-3626 for reservations or visit
