North Texas Jazz Festival Announces 2006 Dates

One of the most prominent festivals for bands from middle school up through the university level has announced its dates for the 2006 event. The fourth annual North Texas Jazz Festival will be held from March 31-April 2 in Addison, Texas at the Hotel Inter-Continental.

The event features middle schools, high schools and universities from around the country performing in big bands, combos and vocal jazz groups. Groups from the University of North Texas (UNT) and professional jazz musicians will also perform during the festival. School groups are scheduled to perform during the day on Friday and Saturday, with professional concerts taking place each evening. Performers and spectators can also attend a Sunday Jazz Breakfast.

This year’s festival received 600 students from fifteen states and featured the Chick Corea Trio with Christian McBride and Steve Gadd. Next year’s headliner will be announced on the festival’s website (ntjazzfest.unt.edu) in the coming weeks.

Schools that wish to participate in the festival need to submit a CD/tape audition and an application form by Dec. 2. The benefits of participating include adjudication by the nation’s best educators/musicians (including Ron McCurdy and Sunny Wilkinson for vocal groups; Lou Fischer and Howie Smith for combos; and Steve Houghton and Marvin Stamm for big bands); individual-instrument master classes by UNT jazz faculty; discount tickets to evening concerts and Sunday Jazz breakfast; and awards for most outstanding individual musicians, soloists, etc.

More information, including a complete list of this past year’s invited schools and application materials, is available on the festival’s website.
