22-year-old tenor saxophonist Noah Preminger makes an impressive debut, accompanied by a stellar crew of New Yorkers in pianist Frank Kimbrough, trumpeter Russ Johnson, guitarist Ben Monder, bassist John Hebert and drummer Ted Poor. Highlights include an intimate duet with Monder (“A Dream”), the freebop-ish “Today Is Okay,” the dreamy ballad “Where Seagulls Fly” and the turbulent finale, “Rhythm for Robert.” They also cover Dave Douglas’ poignant “Blues for Steve Lacy” and the challenging Lee Konitz-Warne Marsh vehicle “Sax of a Kind,” which Preminger executes in precise unisons with Monder.
