New York Voices: Sing! Sing! Sing!

I’m a self-confessed sucker for vocal groups. My standards, though, are mighty strict. If you can’t rise to the high bar set by the Hi-Lo’s, the Four Freshmen or the Manhattan Transfer, don’t bother jumping. Fortunately, the New York Voices are well versed in the art of jumping and jiving and wailing and swinging. Their latest outing, Sing! Sing! Sing! (Concord CCD-4961-2; 63:15), sticks to the wide, safe path of big band and swing-era classics. The foursome are in top form on such guaranteed crowd pleasers as “Ain’t Nobody Here but Us Chickens,” “Don’t Be That Way” and the hard-driving title track, but leave plenty of elbow room for solo showcases. Kim Nazarian and Peter Eldridge have a harmonious hoot swapping lines on “I Can’t Believe You’re in Love With Me,” Eldridge stretches out on a slow ‘n’ sexy “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” Darmon Meader skillfully handles the hairpin turns of “Cloudburst” and Lauren Kinhan contributes a sublime “Save Your Love for Me.”
