New Orleans Jazz Heritage Tour to Travel the Globe

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, countries around the globe came the assistance of the Crescent City, pledging to help the region that has defined jazz for centuries. In response to the kindness and support from these countries, Jazz at Lincoln Center with support from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, has organized a global New Orleans Jazz Heritage Tour.

The two-week festival features five ensembles of New Orleans-based musicians traveling the globe, from Europe to Asia to Africa. The groups participating in the tour are James Andrews and the New Orleans All-Stars, Doreen Ketchens, the Marlon Jordan Quartet featuring Stephanie Jordan, New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Collective and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (pictured). The concerts will feature personal narratives of the hurricane in addition to music performances.

The New Orleans Jazz Heritage Tour is the product of a collaboration between Jackie Harris and Mike Kemp, Louisiana natives who have been displaced since the hurricane struck in late August. Harris evacuated to New York on Aug. 28, the day before the hurricane hit, while Kemp arrived in New York weeks before Katrina struck.
