Natalie Cole to Open Ball Game

“The Star-Spangled Banner,” America’s official theme song, has endured more mangling by sub-par singers than even “Stella by Starlight.” Granted, it’s a tough tune to pull off and only so many singers have the multi-octave range it demands, but a singer shouldn’t ever bite off more than he or she can chew. And how many times have you tuned into Monday Night Football to witness a singer going improv on the anthem, stretching that last, soaring line well into the first quarter? Let’s hope Natalie Cole gives our favorite song its due respect this Wednesday in San Francisco. She sings just before the Anaheim Angels knock a few balls out of the park and topple the hometown Giants in game four of the Worlds Series. Game starts at 5:30 p.m., Pacific time. If you have tickets, lucky you. If not, the couch is calling your name.
