Music of Andrew Hill to Be Performed in NYC

A full evening of pianist and composer Andrew Hill’s works will be performed by the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra next Thursday, October 16, at 8 p.m. at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, 155 West 65th Street, NYC. This is only the second concert of all Hill works since the composer’s passing in April 2007.

The first half of the program features arrangements of Hill’s compositions by Ron Horton: “Divine Revelation,” “Dusk,” “ML,” “Laverne,” “No Doubt” and “Venture Inward.” The second half of the program features works arranged by Hill and Horton: “Bellezza #3,” “A Beautiful Day,” “5/4 Piece,” “Faded Beauty #2,” “Faded Beauty #1,” and “New Pinocchio”. Many of these compositions may be heard on Hill’s 2002 release, A Beautiful Day (Palmetto Records).

In other Hill-related news, a 1993 recording of Hill and drummer Chico Hamilton is now available. On Dreams Come True> (Joyous Shout!), these two NEA Jazz Masters bring their varying styles together into a distinct, mutual song of ideas soaked with wit and humor. According to Hamilton, “Hill was a genius and a beautiful human being! It’s an honor to add his unique voice to my recording catalog.”
