Murray Ross: Sings to Legends

“Signature” tunes of superstars-Nat, Sammy, Billie, Ella, Frank…and 11 others. Ross’ big baritone-Robert Goulet’s virile timbre, a hint of Vegas neon-is showcased by Pat Longo’s BIG big band. Lush arrangements include two by veteran Russ Garcia-“Nature Boy” as “a safari into Lion King Country,” with blazing trumpet by Wayne Bergeron, and “Candy Man.” Charts by Lon Norman handle “Come Fly With Me” with an Acapulco beat; “I Wanna Be Around;” “I Apologize” with elegant trumpet obligato by George Graham; “Volare” as a macarena; “You’re Something,” a lovely ballad by Steve Allen. A Gordon Brisker arrangement treats “Makin’ Whoopee” as a cha-cha, and a Gary Urwin chart reprises “God Bless the Child.” Strong voice, tasty-straight reading of lyrics, Hollywood chop-meisters, everybody SWINGS. Nice! Bin this one under “BAND-WITH-SINGER,” not nostalgia.
