Mosaic Releases Next Selects

Mosaic Records has released sets three and four of its Mosaic Select collections, a series of three-disc sets by a single artist that uphold Mosaic’s commitment to quality in sound and annotation but don’t go into the exhaustive depth of the label’s larger sets. The new Mosaic Select sets collect work by trombonist Bennie Green and pianist Randy Weston. (The previous two Mosaic Selects were compilations featuring trombonist Grachan Moncur III and trumpeter Carmell Jones.)

The Bennie Green set covers much of the enthusiastic trombonist’s work from 1958-’62, including tunes from sessions with saxophonist Charlie Rouse, drummer Elvin Jones and bassists Paul Chambers and Milt Hinton. Most of the material is from ’58, when Green cut the albums Back On the Scene and Soul Stirrin’, and nine of the set’s 33 tracks come from a November ’58 session that was released by Blue Note Japan as The 45 Session. Randy Weston’s innovative and influential explorations in African music and jazz are chronicled on his Mosaic Select set, which collects six albums the pianist made for various labels from 1957 to ’63: Little Niles, Live at the Five Spot, Piano-a-la-Mode, Uhuru Afrika and Highlife. There are also six previously unreleased Weston cuts from a June, 1960 session with Cecil Payne, Ron Carter and Roy Haynes. Track and personnel information on this set is available through this link.

Mosaic’s larger collections keep coming as well. A seven-CD box titled Complete Brunswick, Parlophone and Vocalion Sessions of Bunny Berigan is the label’s latest offering and a notice on the Mosaic Web site states that two sets are almost sold out: The Complete Illinois Jacquet Sessions 1945-50 (#165) and The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of the Chico Hamilton Quintet (#175).
