Morcheeba: Who Can You Trust?

Morcheeba isn’t too crazy about the trip-hop label (who is these days?) even though the hazy backdrops on their Who Can You Trust? (Discovery 77050 55:56), practically invite it. That’s not a backhanded compliment, though-they bring more to the table than just some laid-back attitude. Instead of trying to numb you into submission, brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey use their textural touches (slide guitar, tablas, analog synths, scratching, etc.) as song enhancers, rather than songs in and of themselves. Add Skye Edwards’ fashionably detached songs to the Eastern swirl of “Trigger Hippie,” or the semi-dirge feel of “Howling” and you have an album that does more than just profile.
