Synthesizer enthusiasts will gather tonight in New York City for the third annual Moogfest. The home of this year’s electro-fest is B.B. King’s Blues Club, where keyboard aficionados will perform in tribute to synthesizer inventor Bob Moog.
Moog ignited the synthesizer phenomenon in 1965 with the introduction of his namesake electronic keyboard. The instrument received widespread attention in 1968 with Switched-On Bach, a collection of Bach interpretations featuring composer Wendy Carlos on a Moog modular synthesizer.
Acts at this year’s Moogfest include Keith Emerson (who plays an additional show at King’s club tomorrow at 8 p.m.), the School of Rock, DJ Logic, Roger O’Donnell of the Cure, the Mahavishnu Project, Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater and former Mahavishnu Orchestra keyboardist/Miami Vice composer Jan Hammer. Moog Music will also present a lifetime achievement award to an artist who has expressed his or her unique vision through the Moog instrument.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. B.B. King’s is located at 237 W. 42nd St. between 7th and 8th Ave. Tickets cost $45 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling (212) 997-4144. A $75 VIP ticket is also available, and includes a collectable poster and post-show meet and greet with the bands.
