Miyumi Project: Live in Poland

The Miyumi Project is a Chicago based group of Asian- American and African- American musicians led by bassist /composer Tatsu Aoki. The group combines three taiko drummers with Aoki, a violinist, and two reed players. Each of the compositions establishes a medium tempo groove and then embellishes it and adds solos. The Polish audience seems to have received the music with some enthusiasm judging by the applause on the record.

The music is very well recorded but is unfortunately not at all interesting harmonically and does not offer much in the way of timbral variation, and the pieces go on for much longer than the soloists and the ensemble playing can provide interesting ideas; and some soloists often show intonation problems. Perhaps one just had to be there.
