Midnite: Unpolished

For some meaty uncut reggae, devoid of dancehall ranting and lofty dub ventures, check out Unpolished (Rastafaria RTF-40498-2; 54:03) from Midnite. Although the quartet hails from St. Croix, Virgin Islands, instead of Jamaica, they know how to deliver passionate, socially conscious reggae with effortless conviction. Vaughan Benjamin’s quavering voice connects to both the heart and mind on the meditative “Love the Life You Live” and the preachy “The Eyes Are the Light.” In a post-Bob Marley age full of boasting Shaggys, Midnite is a welcome respite from the dancehall drollness.
