Mick Rossi Trio: Inside the Sphere

Rossi’s work on Inside the Sphere covers a range from free-form sound painting to bluesy, almost Randy Westonesque statements. The freer material is effective and for the most part low-key. His trio members, Kermit Driscoll and Charles Descarfino, seem to relish subsidiary roles and do it with real grace. The introspective playing that dominates is very convincing but makes the CD feel long, and Rossi is so interesting on the up-tempo parts of his extended solo piece that one wishes for more in that department. Still, this is satisfying work that piano-watchers should check out.
