Michael Rossi: Beauty and the Blues

A former student of Jerry Bergonzi’s, Rossi comes well recommended in Darius Brubeck’s liner notes. Brubeck’s accolades about the tenor saxophonist appear largely true, especially “direct” and “emotional.” The album, composed of seven Rossi originals, has a Trane-like flavor, with occasional hints of Charles Lloyd. The rhythm section includes pianist Tom McKinley, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Billy Hart, all worthy constituents of this bracing style of jazz.
