Michael Coppola: Virtuoso Too

A former student of guitar great Sal Salvador, fingerstylist Coppola plays an eight-string instrument throughout this eclectic set, which includes jazz standards, originals and two Chopin waltzes. His attempt to simultaneously manage bass lines, harmonies and melodies is commendable; however, parts are frequently compromised in the midst of the overly busy, nervous-sounding arrangements. And while he occasionally has good ideas, his treatments tend to be overly mannered; a case in point is “Body And Soul,” with its annoying vibrato and string bends.
