Miami Hosts Jazz Film Fest

Coral Gables, Fla. is host to the Ninth Annual Miami Jazz Film Festival, which will take place October 22-24 at the Nuevo Teatro Venevision. The festival features nine films, all with a focus on a jazz artist or the music itself.

The festival kicks off with the 1988 French film Nina Simone: Love Sorceress, a rarely seen document of a 1976 Paris concert. Immediately following that film is the 2002 film Keeping Time: The Life, Music and Photography of Milt Hinton, which tells the story of legendary bassist and photographer Milt Hinton (pictured), who died in 2000.

Also on the weekend’s schedule is a double bill of Mystery Mr. Ra and Sun Ra Arkestra Private Films, films concerning the life and work of pianist and supposed Saturnian Sun Ra.

Other films at the fest include The Last of the First, a history of the Harlem Blues & Jazz Band; Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue; and Dame la Mano (Give Me Your Hand), a look into the meaning of music for Cuban exiles.

Tickets for each film are $6 ($5 for WDNA-FM members) and are available by calling 88.9 FM at (305) 662-8889. More information, including complete descriptions of the films and more detailed schedule, can be found at www.miamijazzfilmfestival.org.
