MFSL Reissues Soultrane

Since the advent of SACD, classic jazz discs are getting the ultimate makeover treatment. The old stuff hasn’t sounded this good since it was being played at Minton’s and whatnot. SACD forerunner Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) are slowly trickling out great albums of yore done-up with its GAIN 2 mastering process, the latest of which is John Coltrane’s Soultrane. The one he did in ’58 with the Red Garland Trio. MFSL took the music off the master tape, sent it through a Direct Stream Digital process and put it on a dual-layer SACD, playable in regular CD players as well as SACD units. Sounds great, but where’s the bonus track? Shame on you, MFSL-you should now the rules by now.
