There isn’t much that needs to be said about organist Melvin Rhyne’s Stick To The Kick: solid and smoking just about does it. On this quintet date, the legendary Wes Montgomery cohort expertly mixes well-hooked originals with chestnuts like “Laura” and Tadd Dameron’s “Lady Bird” and even throws in an eyebrow-singeing version of Bud Powell’s seldom heard “Wail.” His Monk Competition alumnae front line of trumpeter Ryan Kisor and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander often deliver remarkably earthy solos. Peter Bernstein and Kenny Washington prove once again they are among the most engaging guitar-drums teams currently working in organ units. Yet, this is Rhyne’s date from start to finish, and his enveloping sound and cogent solos are the glue that hold the proceedings together. It’s also refreshing to hear a jazz organ disc free of cheesy R&B covers (Rhyne is the rare Wisconsin export that is cheese-free); instead, Rhyne just emphasizes jazz fundamentals-maybe that’s what he means by Stick To The Kick.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
