The Marian McPartland Trio will headline this year’s Suttons Bay JazzFest on July 24 in Suttons Bay, Mich. The annual Suttons Bay JazzFest will turn 12 this year at its location at the Suttons Bay Marina Park.
In addition to McPartland (pictured), the festival will also include performances by the Suttons Bay High School Jazz Band, Marcus Belgrave’s “Louis Armstrong Tribute Band,” the Jeff Haas Double Quartet and the Harry Goldson Quintet, featuring Jim Cooper and David Hay. Award-winning regional wineries and restaurants will also offer selections of local food and beverages.
The festival is sponsored by Suttons Bay JazzFest Foundation, Inc., DTE Energy, Fifth Third Bank, and Fifth Third Securities, Bahle’s of Suttons Bay and CMU Public Radio.
The festival will last from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday July 24. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $30 at the gate, and are available by calling 231-271-4444. Tickets will go on sale Memorial Day weekend.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
