McPartland Honored With New Works

New commissioned works by Robin Eubanks and John Hollenbeck were debuted at the 2003 conference for the International Association for Jazz Education, held in Toronto in January, and each piece of music was presented in honor of pianist Marian McPartland, who will turn 85 on March 20.

Eubanks’ “Full Circle” and Hollenbeck’s “Folkmoot” were commissioned as part of the ASCAP/IAJE commissions program, a six-year-old initiative that asks for new work from both an established jazz composer of international prominence (Eubanks) and an emerging jazz composer under the age of 35 (Hollenbeck). The artists are paid for their work as well, but the amount was not disclosed. ASCAP and IAJE simply ask that the pieces be written for ensembles of more than four and less than eighteen players.
