Mary Lou Williams Festival Features Females

The Kennedy Center will present its sixth annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival from May 10-12. The event will include performances by Jane Monheit, Cindy Blackman, and Tania Maria, plus over a dozen other groups led by females. On May 11, vocalist/saxophonist Vi Redd will be presented with the 2001 Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Award, an annual lifetime achievement award previously given to Marian McPartland and Shirley Scott, among others. Also, the 2001 IAJE/BET on Jazz Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Sextet will perform free concerts at the Kennedy Cneter’s Millennium Stage on May 11 and 12.
