Set your TiVos: After an appearance on Charlie Rose’s PBS talk show on Wednesday night, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis (pictured) will appear on the boob tube again tonight, this time on HBO’s On the Record With Bob Costas. Marsalis will speak with Costas and will also perform with his quartet in promotion of his new album The Magic Hour, which was released March 9 on Blue Note (click here to read more about the album). On the Record With Bob Costas airs at 11 p.m., EST on HBO. If you don’t have HBO, you really should. Curb Your Enthusiasm is super-funny stuff; there’s championship boxing, too; and every once in a while the channel even runs a decent movie.
We would have told you about Marsalis’ appearance on Rose’s program, but-we’ll admit it-we didn’t know! But, some PBS affiliates rerun select episodes of Charlie Rose over the weekend; check your local listings. And if you absolutely have to see it, you can order a tape of the show from charlierose.com.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
